Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open -35 points today at 7115.  A shakey start is expected this morning as the UK blue chip index slides back from yesterdays base metal driven rally.  It was a broadly positive session yesterday Stateside, the Dow Jones closed Wednesday higher, rising by 104 points or 0.3%, to finish at 34,681 whilst the S&P similarly added 0.34% to end the session at 4,358.  The Nasdaq was only marginally higher, closing at 14,665, while the small-cap Russell bucked the trend by falling nearly 1% to 2,252.  In Asia, the mood was less positive, trading worries over the Chinese tech sector and the threat of censure, along with rising Covid-19 numbers drove markets lower.  Japan’s Nikkei this morning slid 200 points or 0.7% to 28,169 and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gave up 2.4% to 27,279, meanwhile the Shanghai Composite was 0.6% lower at 3,529.

Persimmon Homes reports higher half-year revenue and is expecting housing demand to remain robust beyond the end of the stamp-duty relief period. Revenue came in at £1.84bn up from £1.19bn a year earlier. The average house selling price is now £250,350, up 3.3% from a year earlier.
Deliveroo reported an 88% jump in Q2 orders to £78m, although annual gross margins would be in lower half of its prior estimates.
AstraZeneca says its experimental drug Tezepelumab, was granted a speedy review by the FDA. In trials it showed it can reduce attacks in patients with severe and uncontrolled forms of it.
Electrocomponents has delivered a very strong trading performance across all regions during Q1. YoY like for like revenue surged 37%.
Entain reports a 11% increase in H1 revenue as the resumption of major sporting events, like the Euros, boosted betting volumes. Core earnings will be between £850,-£900m ahead of current expectations.
WH Smith sees small improvement to management's expectations for current financial year. Liquidity position remains strong.
