Markets Overview:

UK 100 called to open flat this morning at 5947.   Comes after stocks in the US yesterday gave up early gains to close sharply lower after President Donald Trump tweeted that he would reject rejecting Democrats’ $2.4 trillion stimulus plan. This  did not stop Asian stock markets hitting two-week highs however. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slid more than 300 points, after positing a 205-point gain earlier in the session.  The Dow Jones lost 378 points, or 1.3% on Tuesday, while the S&P 500 fell 1.4%, and the Nasdaq completed an all red day stateside shedding 1.6%.

Company News:

Kaz Minerals has suspended production at its Bozymchak copper and gold mine in Kyrgyzstan amid post-election unrest in the Central Asian nation.

Tate & Lyle say their CFO Imran Nawaz is to leave the company to become Tesco's new CFO.

Tesco reported a 15.6% fall in H1 core profit, with a jump in sales due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which was more than outweighed by higher costs and losses at Tesco Bank. They made an operating profit before one-off items of £1.037bn (2019: £1.229bn). The group have forecast that retail operating profit for FY 2020-21 would be at least the same level as 2019-20 on a continuing operations basis.

Virgin Money is to cut up to 400 jobs as it presses ahead with cutbacks after shelving restructuring plans early in the pandemic.
