Markets Overview:

UK 100 called to open +65 points this morning at 6919. Global markets rallied hard yesterday and last night, as Democrats took control of Congress, and hopes of a big borrowing and big spending Democratic administration will drive growth. Tech stocks suffered initially in the US, as President-elect Joe Biden has plans to toughen up regulation and taxes on them and large corporations. This euphoria was some what dampened towards the end of the day as scenes from Capitol Hill resembled something out of a movie, with Trump supporters storming the Senate in protest towards the electoral results. Reports that one supporter was shot and guns were drawn inside the senate. Elsewhere oil hit 10 month highs after the promise of a production cut from Saudi Arabia, with Brent last up 0.7% at $54.69 and WTi rising 0.95 at $51.07 a barrel.

Company News:

B&M European Value Retail reported sales growth of 22.5% in Q3, while lowering its annual profit outlook after the retailer let go of £80m of property tax relief offered by the UK government. They now expect to report an adjusted core profit of between £540-570m.

Centrica: The GMB union said its members at Centrica's British Gas will start a five-day strike from today.
Mitchells & Butlers are exploring an equity capital raise, as a new national lockdown shut the pub operator's sites across England, although it added that no decision had been made yet on its timing, size or terms. They reported that sales have plunged 67.1% for the 14 weeks ended Jan 2nd, due to strict restrictions in both the UK and Germany.
Sainsbury's reported underlying sales for the key Christmas quarter were up 8.6%, as they benefited from out of home eating and drinking being restricted by COVID-19 regulations. They expect to report an underlying profit before tax of at least £330m in its year to March 2021 (2020: £586m), which beats its previous forecast of £270m.
