Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open -30 points today at 7136.  A more muted open is expected this morning following yesterdays rally which was driven in main by financial and travel stocks in anticipation of yesterday evenings announcement of Covid-19 restrictions ending in the country.  Boris Johnson confirmed an end to Covid-19 restrictive measures in England on 19 July, along with all requirements to wear face masks and social distancing in places like pubs, providing a major boost to local companies.  Asian markets were mixed this morning, The Shanghai Composite in China dipped 0.54% and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index slipped 0.43%. In Japan, the Nikkei 225 gained 0.27% while US markets will reopen today following yesterdays independence day holiday.

Ocado reports half year results showing a 20% rise in retail revenue to £1.2bn in its UK market where it operates in a joint venture with Marks and Spencer. It has also signed a new agreement with Auchan Retail to use its technology to develop Alcampo's online business in Spain. The pandemic has driven the shift into online grocery buying.
Sainsbury's beat expectations for Q1 sales, though growth did slow in comparison to last year when shoppers first started to stock up in lockdown-1. Sales rose 1.7% v a analyst's expectation of a fall of 1.7%. Co. expects to report underlying profit before tax of at least £660m in the 2021-22 year.
Marstons appoints Hayleigh Lupino as CFO from October 3rd, 2021.
Astrazeneca announces that AZN-Alexion transaction cleared in the EU.
Purplebricks sees full-year 2022 EBITDA to be flat year-on-year as expected. Full year profit was £6.8m and has started the new financial year in a strong position. The company's new pricing structures, including a money back guarantee and simplified two-tier proposition, are launching in July.
