Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open +64 points at 8,823.  The UK 100 looks set to bounce this morning, having endured a difficult trading day on Tuesday.

The Dow Jones tumbled for a second day, however did close the session off the day lows.  The blue-chip average dropped 670.25 points, or 1.55%, building on Monday’s plunge of nearly 650 points. The Dow ended the session at 42,520.99. The S&P 500 dropped 1.22% and closed at 5,778.15 after notching its worst day of the year in the prior session. The Nasdaq lost 0.35% and finished at 18,285.16.  At their worst levels, the Dow fell more than 840 points and the S&P 500 slid 2%. The Nasdaq had dropped more than 2%

Asian markets mostly advanced on Wednesday as investors analysed China’s economic growth and inflation targets while monitoring global trade tensions following new US tariffs on China, Mexico, and Canada.  Despite concerns over escalating trade disputes, key indexes across the region recorded gains.  Japan’s Nikkei 225 climbed 0.37%, with the Topix adding 0.38%.  South Korea’s Kospi gained 1.11%, while the small-cap Kosdaq rose 0.91%.  Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index surged 1.65%, and China’s CSI 300 edged up 0.32%.

Breedon Group has announced the acquisition of Lionmark Construction Companies LLC for $238 million, a move expected to significantly enhance its US operations. This strategic acquisition will more than double Breedon’s US revenue, diversify its product offerings into asphalt and surfacing, and leverage Lionmark’s established relationships in the road infrastructure market.

 

Dowlais announced this morning Full Year adjusted revenue of £4.94bn and Profit before tax of £ 215m. ( 2024: £264m) Forecasted 2025 revenue to range from flat to mid-single digit decline as restructuring savings and ongoing performance initiatives are expected to offset the impact of lower volumes

 

Games Workshop lifted guidance for the full year, saying trading in January and February had been ahead of expectations, with strong trading across both the core business and licensing.

 

Ibstock reported a resilient financial performance for the year ended 31 December 2024, despite challenging market conditions. The company’s revenue decreased by 10% to £366 million, with profit before tax falling to £21 million. However, strategic progress was made with significant investments in sustainable manufacturing capacity, including the ramp-up of production at the new Atlas factory and advancements in product innovation. The company anticipates improved market volumes in 2025, supported by its enhanced capacity and strategic positioning, which is expected to drive future growth and shareholder returns.
