Markets Overview:

 

 

The UK 100 is called to open +73 points today at 7457.  The UK 100 looks set to start the new year with a bang, playing catch-up with Wall Street after new records were set overnight, including Apple becoming the world’s first $3trn company.  US Markets were open yesterday, And started the year in strong fashion, the Dow Jones and S&P 500 both ascending to record highs, up 0.7% and 0.6% respectively.  The Nasdaq jumped 1.2% and the small cap index, the Russell 2000, also climbed 1.2%.  The picture in Asia this morning was more mixed, China’s Shanghai Composite slipped 0.28% and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index fell 0.08%.  The Nikkei in Japan jumped 1.77% while South Korea’s Kospi remained near the flat line.
