Markets Overview:

 

UK 100 called to open +10 points this morning at 6043.  Markets in the US yesterday continued the positive momentum at the end to last week, The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 236.08 points, or 0.9%, to close at 26,664.40 & the S&P 500 rose 23.49 points, or 0.7%, touching 3,294.61 at the close, while the Nasdaq gained 157.52 points, or 1.5%, to close at 10,902.8, earlier in the session hitting a new intraday record at 10,905.40.  Global markets were driven higher by A raft of stronger-than-expected manufacturing data in Europe China & US ISM data, signaling a steadying global economy.

 

Company News:

 

Babcock reports a 40% drop in profits in Q1 as higher costs from the coronavirus downturn hurt its operations, while sales from its core business grew slightly. It has also decided to cancel its dividend for the financial year ended 31st March 2020.

 

BP cuts its dividend after reporting a record loss in Q2 of $6.7bn as the coronavirus crisis hammered energy demand.

 

Diageo reports a bigger-than-excpected decline in underlying net sales as demand for its whiskies, vodka and gin fell in all markets except North America. They reported an 8.4% drop in organic sales (7.3% was expected) which marks the company's worst annual sales performance in more than a decade.

 

Direct Line have boosted its interim dividend and declared a special payout to make up for cancelling its 2019 dividend, after reporting a small drop in H1 2020 operating profit. They reported a pre-tax profit of £264.9m (2019: £274.3m).

 

EasyJet reported a Q3 2020 loss of £324.5m as flights were grounded due to the coronavirus pandemic. They plan to fly around 40% of its capacity over the rest of the summer, more than it had originally scheduled on better than expected booking demand.

 

NMC Health has secured a $250m financing facility which will allow it to continue to provide healthcare, its administrators Alvarex & Marsal have said.
