Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open -6 points today at 7577.  A cautious start is expected this morning on what is set to be a huge news day for investors as the Bank of England is expected to raise interest rates for the second month running, the first time that has happened since 2004.  A 0.25% hike to 0.5% is the City’s prediction plus some change in the current quantitative easing programme.  On Wall Street yesterday, The Dow jumped more than 200 points, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq advanced 0.9% and 0.5%, respectively. Those gains were driven by a jump in tech shares, which were led by a 7.3% rally in Alphabet shares. However after the bell, Shares of Facebook-parent Meta Platforms plunged more than 21% after the company's quarterly profit fell short of expectations. The company also issued weaker-than-expected revenue guidance for the current quarter.  Shares were mixed in Asia on Thursday as the latest batch of company earnings reports kept investors in a buying mood, driving gains on Wall Street.  Markets in China remained closed for Lunar New Year holidays. Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 index gave up 1.1% while Sydney’s S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.4%. Seoul’s Kospi however jumped 2.4%.
