Markets Overview:

 

UK 100 called to open +30 points at 7410; The U.K. ends its 47-year membership of the EU at 11 p.m., following years of angst. It had joined in 1973, under Tory premier Edward Heath with the full support of Margaret Thatcher.  Yesterday The Bank of England kept interest rates on hold in Governor Mark Carney’s final meeting, waiting for more evidence of an economic rebound before supporting it with a cut. The pound jumped. Policy makers voted 7-2 to keep the benchmark at 0.75%.  A mixed session in Asia overnight saw the Nikkei close +227 points at 23,205, whilst the Hang Seng closed at 26,392, -56 points.  The Dow Jones yesterday completely reversed an early decline to close +124 points at 28,859, as did the Nasdaq, closing at 9,298 +23 points, whilst the S&P posted more modest gains, but still benefited from the bounce, closing at 3,283, +10 points.  Oil continued to drift lower overnight, settling at $58.96 and Gold held firm at $1575.

 

In corporate news this morning:

 

Aston Martin announce a strategic equity investment of £182m (by a consortium led by Lawrence Stroll) and proposed rights issue of £318m to raise combined proceeds of £500m to strengthen its balance sheet by improving liquidity and reduce leverage.

 

Hargreaves Lansdown reported HY results with net new business of £2.3bn, assets under administration +22%, 1.2m active clients and profit before tax +12% to £171.1m. Interim dividend +9% to 11.2p (2019: 10.3p).   

 

SSE reported that they expect adjusted EPS for FY 19/20 to be in range of 83-88p. Remains committed to its dividend plan for 5 years until March 2023 and expects to recommend a FY 19/20 dividend of 80p per share. 

 

TalkTalk have added 148,000 fibre customers in Q3 and is on track for the FY. Reported a slight dip in headline revenue to £383m, but said cost savings kept it on track to meet FY earnings expectations.
