The UK 100 Index is set to open lower by 30 points, giving up all the gains made yesterday with political uncertainty in Greece continuing to add pressure to the pot.
Overnight in Asia, the Nikkei was down 190 points on their last trading day of the year (up 7.1% for the year) whilst the Hang Seng was down 255 points at 23,519.
In the US, the Dow Jones saw a run of seven consecutive gains come to an end, as the main index lost 15 points to close at 18,038 (still just 100 points from all-time highs). The S&P did however manage to keep in positive territory, gaining 2 points to 2,091, whilst the Nasdaq was unchanged.
In Europe, more uncertainty over the outcome of elections in Greece is likely to stifle any major rally, while the US closed higher in pre-Christmas trades.
In FX, the euro declined to a two-year low versus the dollar on concern anti-austerity opposition party Syriza will win Greek elections next month, endangering the country’s bailout agreement. GBP vs EUR now trading at 1.27 whilst vs the USD is trading at 1.55.
WTI crude oil fell to $54.15 a barrel and Brent at $59.05.
Gold prices rose as speculators created fresh positions after the precious metal rebounded from the biggest decline in a week in the global markets.
