The UK 100 called to open +34 points at 7795. The UK 100 looks set to make a strong start to the day as the Federal Reserve slowed the pace of interest rate increases and the Fed chairman, Jerome Powell, stated "the disinflationary process has started.” On Wall Street US markets took heart from the slower pace of rate rises and the Dow which had been down over 300 points earlier in the session, closed in positive territory, up 7 points, the Nasdaq Composite added 232 points, 2%, to close at 11,816, while the S&P improved by 43 points or 1.1%, to trade at 4,119. Focus will now switch to interest rates decisions today from the Bank of England and the European Central Bank.
Anglo American report that their 2022 copper production has grown 3% to 664 kt from 647 kt YoY. They say outlook for 2023 remains very dry in Chile.
BT Group has stuck to its FY outlook despite the pressure of high energy costs and other inflationary headwinds, as they reported a 3% dip in Q3 adjusted revenue, just below market expectations.
Cranswick says all four product categories were strongly ahead of Q3 YoY as December trading was robust due to strong customer demand. They expect current financial year outlook to remain in line with expectations.
GlaxoSmithKline state that Jesduvroq/daprodustat has been approved by the US FDA for anaemia of chronic kidney disease.
Renishaw reports that their H1 pretax profit has declined 5% YoY to £77.8m from £81.5m. They expect their FY adjusted pretax profit to be between £140-165m.
Shell posted record Q4 profit of $9.8bn on the back of a strong recovery in earnings from its Liquefied Natural Gas trading, beating analyst forecasts. They reported 2022 annual earnings of $39.9bn, doubling from a year earlier and far exceeding the previous record of $31bn in 2008. They have announced a $4bn share buyback, to be completed by Q1 results announcement.
Wizz Air carries 4.1m passengers in January, up 73% YoY from 2.4m. January capacity up 60% YoY to 4.8m seats from 3m seats.
