Markets Overview:

 

UK 100 called to open +35 points at 6102.  Calls for a a positive open come as traders continued to remain positive of a post-pandemic recovery and news that Sentiment has likely been boosted by news overnight that biotech firm Novavax has started human trials of its coronavirus vaccine candidate in Australia. despite brewing geopolitical tensions in the background. US President Donald Trump said late on Tuesday he is preparing to take action against China this week over its effort to impose national security laws on Hong Kong, but gave no further details. Hong Kong shares led declines among major regional indexes, with Hang Seng falling 0.46 percent, though it kept a bit of distance from a two-month low touched on Monday, with mainland Chinese shares down a similar amount. Japan's Nikkei was almost flat.

 

Company News:

 

British Land reports a £1.1bn loss as their retail portfolio value slumps, as it battles the fallout of the coronavirus crisis.

 

Britvic reported H1 2020 revenue increased +1.4%, EBIT +9.4%, profit after tax +11.5% and adjusted EPS +2.7%. The board has deferred the decision on their dividend payment until later in the year, when impact from COVID-19 will be clearer.

 

Hammerson announce that their CEO David Atkins will step down from his role. He will remain in position until spring 2021 at the latest, while the Board conducts a search for his successor.

 

Petropavlovsk release FY results showing that gold production increased +22%, total gold sales +39%, group revenue +48% and EBITDA +45%.

 

St James's Place post modest 1% rise in April net inflows of £810m as clients stood firm in the face of the impact of the coronavirus on their investments.
