Markets Overview:

 

The UK 100 is called to open +10 points at 7477.  A marginally higher open is expected this morning for the UK 100, despite Joe Biden raising the stakes with Russia last night by warning that NATO “would respond” if the country used chemical weapons against Ukraine, speaking after an emergency summit in Brussels. The US president is visiting Poland today. On Wall Street yesterday, the Dow Jones rebounded by 349.44 points, or 1%, to close at 34,707.94. The S&P added 1.4% at 4,520.16 & The Nasdaq Composite rose 1.9% to 14,191.84.  Asian markets were mixed on Friday as core consumer prices in Japan's capital rose at the fastest pace in more than two years in March.  The Tokyo core consumer price index (CPI), which excludes fresh food but includes energy items, lifted 0.8% year-on-year in March, the fastest pace since December 2019.  Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 0.14% and South Korea’s Kospi gained 0.05%.  The Shanghai Composite in China dipped 0.94% while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index tumbled 2.56%.

AstraZeneca: EU's drug watchdog recommended for approval AstraZeneca's COVID-19 prevention jab, which can be used for patients with immune system problems or severe reactions to normal vaccines.

 

Homeserve: Canada's Brookfield Asset Management said one of its private infrastructure funds was in the early stage of considering a possible takeover offer for Homeserve.

 

Smiths Group reports a H1 pretax profit of £160m, up YoY from £84m as they increased their H1 dividend to 12.3p. They state that H2 demand is strong, but aviation OE market is to see challenges in the near-term. They maintained FY guidance of 3% organic revenue growth.

 

United Utilities says their current trading is in line with expectations as they expect FY underlying operating profit to be broadly the same as last year. Higher revenue has been offset by higher underlying operating costs and they expect their net debt to increase.
