Markets Overview:

 

UK 100 called to open flat at 7260; Further positive sentiment seen in Asia overnight as stocks edged higher on further positive earnings, coupled with fresh vigour in the US-China trade negotiations were enough to push the Nikkei higher by six tenths of a percent, whilst the Hang Seng rose by nearly half a percent.  The earnings reaction was a follow on from the US session where we saw a similar picture unfold, the Dow Jones +.17%, the S&P +.28%, the Nasdaq +.19%.  Earnings will be in focus today with a plethora of companies releasing figures.  Oil edged higher once more to sit at $61 per barrel, whilst Gold also rose to $1492.

 

In corporate news this morning:

 

Astrazeneca sales guidance has been upgraded for the second consecutive quarter. Sales +16%, Revenue +20%, Reported operating profit -11%,; Core Operating profit +43%; Reported EPS -33%; Core EPS +40%.

 

Kaz Minerals delivered record quarterly copper production and gold production.  Copper production on track for full year guidance, gold now expected to exceed the top end of guidance.

Royal Bank of Scotland announced a Q3 2019 trading loss of £8m (2018: £961m profit) after making fresh £900m provision to settle mis-selling claims which was at the higher end of the £600-900m provisions outlined in September. Total income of £150m (2018: £419m) mainly reduced by their investment banking’s arm performance. Outlook for FY 2019 and 2020 remains unchanged.
