Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open +10 points today at 7119.  Calls for a positive open this morning come after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted full approval of Pfizer and BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine on Monday.  Stocks in Asia caught a bid and were strongly higher on Tuesday morning, the Shanghai Composite in China jumped 1.30% and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index surged 1.83%. In Japan, the Nikkei 225 rose 1.03%. On Wall Street yesterday it was a similar story, the S&P added 0.8% to reach 4,479.53, just shy of a record close. The tech-heavy Nasdaq rose about 1.5% to 14,942.65 to hit a record closing high. The Dow Jones gained 215.63 points, or 0.6%, to 35,335.71.

John Wood Group forecast lower annual revenue after the engineering and consultancy firm reported a 14.1% fall in H1 profit, hurt by a drop in contracts from the energy sector due to weak oil demand. H1 adjusted core profit came in at $262m (2020: $305m profit).
PureTech Health swings to a pretax loss in H1 of $94.9m.
