UK 100 called to open +50 points at 7558; Stocks in Asia struggled for traction as investors mulled the situation arising from the deadly coronavirus outbreak. Oil steadied after its recent slide to trade at $62.7 per barrel. U.S. equity futures were steady, while shares closed little changed in Tokyo and Sydney, and ticked higher in Hong Kong. As officials in China widened their travel ban beyond the epicenter of the outbreak. Focus on pound sensitive stocks today as the pound strengthened as Brexit fears fade. The Nikkei posted modest gains, closing +31 points at 23,827, with similar results coming out of Hong Kong on the Hang Seng closing 27,949 (+40 points). In the US it was a mixed trading session with no sizeable gain or loss across the major three indices. The Dow Jones closed at 29,160 (unchanged), the S&P closed at 3.325 (+3 points) and the Nasdaq added 18 points, to close at 9,402. Gold continued to edge higher, trading at $1561.
Just Eat - The British watchdog is to investigate the acquisition by takeaway.com of Just Eat as they are considering whether the deal will result in the creation of a relevant merger situation and will affect the competitive landscape in the UK.
Marston’s reported like-for-like sales growth for the period increased +1%. Trading over the Christmas fortnight was strong, with like-for-like sales growth of +4.5%, compensating for more subdued trading in the first three weeks of December as a consequence of poor weather.
Smith & Nephew acquires Tusker Medical Inc (Developer of Tula) a new system for in-office delivery of ear tubes to treat recurrent or persistent ear infections.
