Markets Overview:

 

UK 100 called to open flat points at 7565; Asia stocks pulled back as Chinese officials halted travel from Wuhan, essentially locking down the city of 11 million people as they try to stop the spread of a new SARS-like virus that’s already killed 17 and infected hundreds. The coronavirus, which first appeared last month in the central China city of Wuhan, has spread from the mainland to places including Hong Kong and the U.S.  The Nikkei closed at 23,795 (-235 points) & The Hang Seng closed at 27,812 (-529 points).  In the U.S. Donald Trump's impeachment hearing continued where, house Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff presented the U.S. Senate with a dark portrait of a deeply flawed, even dangerous president as he argued that Donald Trump should be removed from office.  This saw a mixed trading session in the US with the S & P (closing at 3,321 a modest gain of 1 point) and the Nasdaq also closing modestly higher at 9,188 (+21 points). The Dow Jones however had a negative trading session, albeit only by 10 points to close at 29,186 (+10 points).  Oil prices continued to fall overnight, seeing Crude settle just above $62.  Whilst gold continued to trade just over $1550, at $1556 per barrel.

In corporate news this morning:

 

Anglo American reported a +4% increase in fourth-quarter production, driven by a ramp-up at its Brazilian Minas-Rio mine, while water shortages at its Los Bronces mine in Chile weighed on the global miner’s copper output. 

 

ASOS beat analysts expectations for sales growth in the key Christmas trading period, indicating that management has addressed the operational issues that plagued it in 2019. Retail sales +20% (compared to analysts expectations of growth of around 15%). The group said it was on track with its plans for FY 19-20 year and its outlook is unchanged.  

 

Petropavlovsk report that 2019 Gold sales have increased +39% YoY to 514 koz (FY 2018: 36 koz). Gold production for 2020 is expected to range from 620 koz - 720 koz.
