Markets Overview:

UK 100 called to open +18 points this morning at 5817. After yesterday's glut in the markets, Asia followed suit and was broadly weaker. Again, this was down to possible delays in US stimulus and concerns about fresh pandemic lockdowns in Europe. Positive sentiment towards global equity markets has been dented to say the least. The UK is expected to announce to today that all bars, pubs, restaurants and hospitality venues must close at 10pm in a measure to try to curb the spread of COVID-19. Most stocks were down yesterday, but those making the biggest headlines were HSBC and Standard Chartered (-2% in Hong Kong overnight). They have been named among global lenders as having transferred more than $2 trillion in illicit funds over nearly 2 decades. Gold fell last night to $1908.76 per ounce whilst Crude rose 0.48% to $39.5 per barrel and Brent up 0.636% at $41.59.

Company News:

Kingfisher reported a 23.1% rise in H1 2020 profit, driven by a strong sales recovery in its second quarter as consumers took to DIY and gardening projects during the COVID-19 pandemic. They made an adjusted pretax profit of £415m (2019: £337m).
Rolls-Royce are considering a rights issue to raise as much as $3.2bn.
TUI says it has reduced capacity for the coming winter season due to changing travel restrictions and it has continued to evaluate options to boost its balance sheet which has been strained by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Whitbread could cut up to 6,000 jobs (18% of its workforce) in its hotel and restaurant business as it expects demand to remain at lower levels in the short to medium term.
