Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open +26 points today at 6870.  The UK blue chip index is expected to rebound slightly following yesterday sell off, which wiped $44bn off the value of the index, reaching its lowest levels for 3 months as growing fears the spreading Delta variant of the coronavirus harming the global economic recovery sent assets, including oil, falling sharply. It was a similar fate on Wall Street also suffered a difficult session, with the Dow Jones leading the fall, with a 2.1% drop, the worst one day fall since October, while the S&P 500 slid 1.6% and the Nasdaq 1.1%. In Asia this morning the trend continued, Japan’s Nikkei hit a six-month low in early trade before recovering a bit and trade 0.7% lower. The Hang Seng traded lower, slipping 1.1% , while China’s Shanghai Composite was 0.4% lower.

Company News:

Anglo American report that their production rose 20% in Q2, driven by strong output in diamonds and platinum, even as operations were running at 95% of normal capacity because of COVID-19 disruptions. Rough diamond production rose 134% v 2020, while platinum group metals increased 59% to 1.06m ounces and copper production rose 2% to 170,000 tonnes.
 
BHP Group posts annual iron ore output near top end of forecast, thanks to record production at two mines in Western Australia. Q4 overall ouput declines by 4%.
 
Carnival says that 7 additional ships will restart in September and October.
 
EasyJet said it would fly 60% of its pre-pandemic capacity in the July-Sept period, a big jump from the 17% it flew in the previous quarter, as COVID-19 restrictions ease and demand grows.
Fevertree have raised their annual revenue forecast as bars and restaurants began reopening in Q2 but the tonic maker said higher logistics costs have hurt margins. They expect revenue for the year ending in December to be between £295-304m.
