Markets Overview:

 

UK 100 called to open -30 points at 5970.  Calls for a negative open come as scientists reportedly raised doubts over the viability of Moderna's Covid 19 vaccine, which has already seen an investment of $2bn from UK Index listed Astrazeneca.  Overnight in Asia it was a mixed session which saw the Nikkei in Japan rise just short of 1% to close at 20,595.  In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng closed the day flat at 24,367 & in China, the CSI closed half a percent lower at 3,929.  Oil rose marginally overnight to trade at $33.19 per barrel (Brent Crude) & $11.12 per barrel (WTI).

 

Company News:

 

AstraZeneca's drug Lynparza has been approved in the US for HRR gene-mutated metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer.

 

Marks & Spencer reported a 21% fall in annual profit as they are to accelerate their latest turnaround programme to deal with the fallout from the coronavirus. They have taken action total £1bn relative ti its original budget to reduce costs and manage cash. They made a pretax profit of £403m (2019: £512m).

 

Rolls Royce announce a major reorganisation of their business to adapt to the COVID-19 outbreak, cutting 9,000 jobs (from their global workforce of 52,000) and cut capital expenditure. These actions are expected to generate annualised savings of more than £1.3bn.
