Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open +60 points today at 7120.  A positive open today comes in spite of more Omicron and inflation worries.  Wall Street closed lower yesterday as Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell emphasised the Fed’s priority to focus on inflation, with monetary support programmes set to taper regardless of the wall of worry over new Covid strains. The Dow Jones closed 652 points or 1.86% lower at 34,483 while the S&P fell 1.9% to 4,567 and the Nasdaq was off 1.55% to 15,537.  The small-cap focussed Russell dropped 1.92% to 2,198.  The picture was very much brighter this morning in Asia, Japan’s Nikkei was in positive territory up 113 points or 0.4% trading at 27,935.  Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was up 1.18% at 23,753 at 23,752 and the Shanghai Composite was 0.32% higher at 3,575.
