Markets Overview:

 

The UK 100 is called to open +6 points this morning at 7524.  The UK 100 is seen slightly higher this morning as a strong session on Wall Street lifted spirits on the eve of what’s expected to be a record high measure of UK inflation.  On Wall Street, the Dow Jones has gained 431 points to close Tuesday 1.34% higher at 32,654 whilst the S&P added 2.02% and the Nasdaq rose 2.76% to close at 4,088 and 11,984 respectively. The small-cap focussed Russell 2000 index advanced 3.19% to 1,840.  In Asia, this morning, Japan’s Nikkei was up 0.7% to 26,846 and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was ever so slightly lower at 20,582. Similarly, the Shanghai Composite dipped 0.12% to 3,090.

Company News:

Anglo American reports fourth cycle De Beers rough diamond sales of $604m as they note strong consumer demand in the US.

 

 

Aviva report that they are on track to hit their financial targets as they recorded a 5% increase in general insurance sales in Q1, helped by strong performance in commercial insurance in Britain and Canada. General insurance gross written premiums rose to a record £2.1bn, while sales in the insurer's life business rose 1% to £8.7bn.

 

 

British Land returned to an annual profit, helped by a gradual recovery in occupancy at its office and retail spaces after the sector was battered due to the pandemic as people stayed at home. Profit after tax came in at £960m for the 12 months ended March 31st, compared with a loss of £1.08bn a year earlier.

 

 

Burberry said its outlook for the year ahead depended on how quickly China recovered from COVID-19 lockdowns, after meeting expectations for sales and operating profit for its 2022 financial year. They reported a 23% rise in revenue to £2.83bn and a 38% rise in adjusted operating profit to £523m.

 

 

Experian posted a 34% jump in FY profit, as they benefited from robust demand for its consumer services, mainly in North America. They reported a pretax profit of £1.48bn for the year ended March 31st, compared with a profit of $1.08bn a year earlier.

 

 

TUI has released plans for a capital raise to reduce the state aid it received during the pandemic.
