Markets Overview:

 

UK 100 called to open +30 points this morning at 6600.  A positive open is expected today as hopes of Brexit trade deal and a US stimulus package to help businesses and households hit by the Covid-19 economic crisis.  Paired with US Federal Reserve’s decision yesterday to keep buying bonds at a rate of at least $120 billion a month until real progress had been made in the economy saw mixed to positive results on Wall Street yesterday, The Dow Jones finished Wednesday down 44 points, or 0.15%, at 30,154 whilst the S&P 500 edged 0.18 into positive territory as it closed at 3,701. The Nasdaq Composite was stronger, slightly, as it ended the session up 0.5% at 12,658.  Asia-Pacific shares were mostly higher today, the Shanghai composite gaining 1.04% while the Hang Seng index in Hong Kong rose 0.30%.  In Japan, the Nikkei 225 was 0.18% higher.

 

Company News:

 

G4S: Security firm GardaWorld have said that its cash offer for G4S will remain open for acceptance until Jan 6th even as G4S last week agreed to be acquired by U.S. firm Allied Universal.

 

Serco expects revenue and profit to rise slightly in 2021, benefiting from its acquisition of a cleaning and maintenance provider in Australia, while the British outsourcer kept its 2020 forecast unchanged. Their finance chief Angus Cockburn will step down and be replaced by Nigel Crossley.

 

Talktalk have agreed a £1.1bn takeover by a combination of its shareholder Toscafund and private-equity investor Penta. Kate Ferry their CFO has stepped down.

 

WPP expects to return to 2019 levels of underlying growth by 2022 by cutting costs, investing in technology, and making targeted acquisitions. Net sales have fallen 6.7% in the two months to November, an improvement on the 7.6% drop in the previous quarter. They will also resume its share buyback in 2021 and intends to grow its dividend with a pay-out ratio of around 40% of headline EPS.
