UK 100 is called to open +24 points this morning at 7007. The FTSE looks set to open above 7000 today for the first time since February 2020. This comes as investors appear to be looking past the some of the pessimism which has dogged the economy and the markets over the past 18 months. The FT polled numerous fund managers to find some were looking at where the economic data was likely to get better next, having seen the US improve quickly this year. and consensus seemed to be Europe. Stateside yesterday saw the Dow Jones piling on 305 points to close the session at 34,036 while the S&P 500also continued to extend gains, adding 46 points to close at 4,170. Asian markets continued this trend despite China’s first-quarter GDP being up 18.3% year-on-year which was right at the lower end of the range of forecasts from economists. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng was 25 points firmer at 28,818 and In Tokyo, the Nikkei rose by 29 points to trade at 29,672.

Essentra reports an encouraging start to 2021 with Q1 trading in line with expectations.
