Markets Overview:

UK 100 called to open -12 points this morning at 6519.  Calls for a negative open come after yesterdays announcement that there is an new strain of Covid-19 in the South East of England and data showed COVID-19 infections fell by more than 30% during the second lockdown but have since levelled off according to a large study by Imperial College London and Ipsos MORI.  It was a mixed picture overnight on Wall Street, where the Dow Jones closed down nearly 185 points or 0.6% at 29,861.55 and the S&P 500 lost 0.4%, but the tech-driven Nasdaq rose 0.5%.  In Asia overnight shares were lower as concerns over a surge in COVID-19 cases in multiple countries offset optimism over the vaccine rollout in the US.  China’s industrial production grew 7% year-on-year in November while retail sales increased 5% compared to a year ago.  Chinese stocks were lower with the Shanghai composite falling 0.03% and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index falling 0.57%.  In Japan, the Nikkei 225 slipped 0.17%.
