Markets Overview:

 

UK 100 called to open -55 points this morning at 6330.  Calls for a slightly muted open come on the back of a mixed trading session in Asia as strong positive sentiment ealier in the week, seems to have made way for a slightly more cautious attitude, in Japan, the Nikkei gained 171 points or 0.68% to trade at 25,520 whilst Hong Kong’s Hang Seng ended the day in the red, down 135 points or 0.52% at 26,091. The Shanghai Composite was 0.32% lower at 3,332.  Wall Street's trading session on Wednesday was mixed. The Dow Jones closed slightly lower to close at 29,397, down 23 points, having been 100 points higher during early trading.  The S&P, meanwhile, added 0.77% to finish the day at 3,572 and the Nasdaq raced up 2% to finish at 11,786.

 

Company News:

Burberry said its sales have returned to growth in October showing it was recovering from the impact of COVID-19, an improvement from the 6% drop in comparable store sales in the three months to the end of September. They reported revenue of £878m for H1 2020, down 31% on a year earlier but better than analysts had predicted. Adjusted operating profit fell 75% to £51m.

ITV says it expects total advertising revenue to be up in Q4 y-o-y after it rebounded from the pandemic lows. Advertising spend was down 7% in Q3, following a 43% plunge in Q2. They also stated that most of its studio productions have resumed filming.

Legal & General will keep its final dividend payment for 2020 flat due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Mediclinic reported an 86% drop in profits for H1 2020. Earnings for H1 dropped to £15m (2019: £109m).

National Grid posted a 12% slide in H1 underlying profit due to coronavirus-related costs and bad debts in the USA and maintained expectations of a £400m hit this year from the pandemic. Underlying profit fell to £1.15bn for H1 2020 (2019: £1.3bn).

Premier Oil cut its 2020 production outlook to 61,000-64,000 barrels of oil per day from a previous forecast of 65,000-70,000 due to problems at its Catcher field.

WH Smith said it has started to see encouraging signs of recovery in North America, where its opening stores and securing new business after coronavirus-led curbs led to an annual headline pretax loss. They posted a pretax loss of £69m (2019: £155m profit).
