UK 100 called to open +12 at 7200 this morning, providing investors with some much needed positive sentiment to begin the trading day, US trading closed on a positive note with the Dow Jones +147 points, the S&P +20 points and the Nasdaq +47 points. overnight in Asia we saw the Nikkei +164 points and the Hang Seng +133 points perhaps suggestions that negative sentiment has turned positive ahead of today’s OPEC meeting at which Saudi Arabia will use both stick and carrot to persuade its OPEC partners to defend oil prices. Oil continued to find rising support overnight settling at $63.4 per barrel to stay in its one month long up-channel. Gold continued to tick upwards as the traditional safe haven continued its recent momentum to settle at $1477.
Astrazeneca Merck Lynparza wins approval in China for ovarian cancer treatment.
DS Smith reports a profit jump of 15% in H1. This was bolstered by increased demand from online retailers and cost savings from its recent acquisition of Spanish rival Europac. Adjusted pre-tax profit was £351m.
St Modwens provides trading update and reiterates its strong progress on delivering the deep pipeline of opportunities in its existing portfolio. UK property market continues to remain challenging.
