Markets Overview:

 

UK 100 called to open +26 points at 7525; U.S. equity futures gained and stocks in Asia traded mixed Wednesday as investors weighed the spreading coronavirus against expectations for policy support.  The Nikkei traded 0.7% higher during the trading session today to close +175 points at 23,861, while the Hang Seng rose by 1% to close out 286 points higher at 27,873.  It was a mixed session in the US yesterday having given up many of the early gains.  The Dow Jones closing out the day flat at 29,276, still approaching record highs.  he S&P added 5 points to close at 3,357 and the Nasdaq closed at 9,638, a gain of 10 points.  Oil continued to bounce from 12 month lows on Monday to trade at $55.67 per barrel, whilst gold pulled off its highs to trade at $1564.

 

In corporate news this morning:

 

Babcock have reduced profit forecast on oil & gas woes. This is due to an exceptional charge of around £85m to write down the value of its oil and gas assets. Now expects underlying operating profit to come in at the lower end of guidance at around £540m.

 

Dunelm upbeat on FY outlook as third quarter starts well. FY pre-tax profit came in slightly above market expectations with successful winter sales across all areas of the business. They also declared a special dividend payment of 8p (an increase of 0.5p). FY profit guidance is now expected to be in the range of £135m-137.3m.   

 

Plus 500 reports 62% fall in annual pretax profit of $189.3m (2019: $503m). Average of approximately 3 million customer trades per month in 2019. FY average deposit per active customer +19% YoY. They believe that customer trading patterns have now adjusted following regulatory changes introduced in Europe last year.
