Markets Overview:

 

UK 100 is called to open flat points this morning at 6526.  This comes as pound strength held back the UK blue-chip index later in Wednesdays session.  Some positive news for traders may be that US Federal Reserve chief Jerome Powell committed again to support the economy yesterday, saying stimulus measures would be staying in place until the US is well out of the Covid pandemic.  Overnight we saw Oil hit new 13 month highs, so focus today could be on the oilies.  On Wall Street it was a mixed session on Wednesday, the Dow Jones closed at 31,437 up just 61 points or 0.2%.  The S&P closed slightly lower to end at 3,909 whilst the Nasdaq was marked 35 points or 0.25% lower at 13,972.  In Asia overnight, Japan’s Nikkei moved positively up 57 points or 0.19% to trade at 29,562, whilst Hong Kong’s Hang Seng added 134 points or 0.45% to close at 30,173.

Company News:

AstraZeneca reports that their 2020 revenue has risen 9% YoY to $26.6bn. Their pretax profit for 2020 increased to $3.92bn (2019: $1.55bn).

 

Coca-Cola HBC states that their 2020 net profit has fallen 15% to 414.9m euros.

 

Royal Mail says that the exceptional volumes they have been experiencing through the pandemic has affected their quality of service.  Their 9-month revenues were up 14% YoY to £9.31bn.

 

Ted Baker reports that their Q4 trading has been difficult and heavily impacted by the covid pandemic. They are taking a cautious approach and are assuming UK stores will be closed until the end of May. Their revenue (reported retails sales) has fallen 47% YoY.
