Markets Overview:

 

The UK 100 is called to open +5 points today at 7650. A marginally higher open is expected this morning for UK markets, continuing the strong performance we have seen this week. Asian markets were mixed on Thursday as the Reserve Bank of India’s governor announced that the repo rate will remain unchanged at 4%.  Japan’s Nikkei advanced 0.42% to 27,696 and South Korea’s Kospi rose 0.21% to 2775.  The Shanghai Composite in China fell 0.15% to 3,475 while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng slipped 0.19% to 24,782.  The picture was positive on Wall Street yesterday as tech shares led a broad rally, clawing back some of their losses after a rough start to the year.  The Nasdaq jumped 2.08% to close at 14,490.37. The S&P gained 1.5% to 4,587.18, while the Dow Jones rose 305.28 points, or 0.86%, to close at 35,768.06.

Company News:

Ashmore report that their assets under management on Dec 31st was at $87.3bn, down 8% during H1. Their H1 pretax profit came in at £116m, down 23% YoY.

 

 

AstraZeneca have forecast higher 2022 sales after the drugmaker posted better-than-expected Q4 profit as it gets a lift from its COVID-19 antibody treatment. They did warn that its gross profit margin from coronavirus products is expected to be lower than the company average for this year, while sales are expected to decline by low-to-mid twenties percentage.

 

 

Babcock International agrees to sell 15% stake in AirTanker to Equitix for £95m.

 

 

Prudential announces that CEO Mike Wells will retire at the end of March and will be replaced by Mark Fitzpatrick on an interim basis.

 

 

Rolls-Royce completes sales of 23% stake in AirTanker to Equitix for £189m cash. They plan to use proceeds to rebuild balance sheet and boost credit profile.

 

 

Unilever reported Q4 sales growth of 4.9% (beating average analyst forecasts of 3.8%) as people ate more at home. They expect their underlying sales growth in 2022 to be in the range of 4.5-6.5%. Pricing will continue to be strong, with some impact on volume as a result.

 

 

Watches of Switzerland expects FY revenue and profit to be at top end of previous guidance.
