Markets Overview: (Source: Bloomberg, FT, Reuters, DJ Newswires)

The UK 100 Index is called to open higher by 17pts at 6840pts after a sombre session saw just 5pts added yesterday.

With our American friends enjoying a day off, trading volumes were thin yesterday.

The best performing UK 100 stock was ITV (ITV.L) up 3.55% to close at 218.70p, the highest price since 2001 on talk of a takeover from Virgin Media owner Liberty Global.

BAE Systems (BA..L) added 2.45% after analysts at Bank of America upgraded its rating on the company from 'underperform' to 'buy' citing increased geopolitical tensions worldwide may provide a boost for defence budgets in countries such as the US, Saudi Arabia and Sweden.

WM Morrison (MRW.L) ended the session at the foot of the table, down 2.25%, as the supermarkets once again suffered as a result of Friday's profit warning from Tesco (TSCO.L). Tesco fell by 1.91% while J Sainsbury (SBRY.L) shed 0.28%.

In Asian markets, the Topix index rallied in Tokyo as the yen weakened before Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announces a new cabinet tomorrow while the Nikkei 225 rallied 1.25%.

The ASX 200 added 0.5% as the Reserve Bank of Australia said an overvalued currency is hampering the economy’s transition to domestic growth drivers from mining investment as it extended the longest pause in interest-rate adjustments since 2006.

In commodities, gold retreated for a third day trading at $1280 as tensions continued to ease in Ukraine. West Texas Intermediate crude fell to $95.52 amid speculation that weakening manufacturing from Germany to China will cap global oil demand. Brent was steady in London.

In focus today we have UK construction PMI at 09:30 and Euro Zone PPI at 10:00. Later this afternoon we have US ISM manufacturing data at 15:00 expected to come in at 57 slightly below last month’s reading.
