Markets Overview: (Source: Bloomberg, FT, Reuters, DJ Newswires)

The UK 100 Index is set to open higher by 45-50 points on the first day of 2015. With volumes expected to be lower than normal, it’ll be interesting to see how the New Year starts after the surprisingly volatile Christmas period.

Overnight in Asia, the Hang Seng was recently up 184 points at 23,789 and the Nikkei was closed.

In the US, the Dow fell 160 points to 17,823, while the Nasdaq lost 41 points at 4,736 and the S&P 500 closed down 21 points to 2,059

In FX, the Euro extends losses, falling to its lowest level since June 2010, after the head of the European Central Bank fanned expectations it would take bolder steps on stimulus this month. Currently trading at 1.29 vs Sterling.

WTI crude oil traded at $54.68 a barrel and Brent at $59.25.

Gold edged higher on Friday as higher oil prices boosted its safe-haven appeal, but the metal looked set to post its third consecutive weekly loss, weighed down by a strong dollar, currently trading at $1187.
