The UK 100 called to open +8 points at 8,775. The UK 100 looks set to open marginally higher this morning, after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on steel and aluminium tariffs, before eyes turn to the Federal Reserve chair who speaks later.
Trump on Monday made good on a promise to slap 25% tariffs on steel and aluminium imports, stepping up a long-promised trade war despite warnings from Europe and China.
Stocks rose in the States Monday as major tech names outperformed to start the week, while traders looked past the latest U.S. tariff threat from President Donald Trump. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 167.01 points, or 0.38%, led by a 4.8% gain in McDonald's. The 30-stock index closed at 44,470.41. The S&P 500 gained 0.67% to end at 6,066.44, and the Nasdaq Composite climbed 0.98% to 19,714.27.
Bellway announced a 11.9% increase in housing completions during the six months ending January 31, 2025, reflecting strong performance amidst challenging market conditions. The company maintained a robust financial position with modest net debt, a strong land bank, and a healthy forward order book, indicating their readiness to capitalize on future growth opportunities in the UK housing market. Bellway’s strategic land investments and operational strengths position it well to deliver future volume growth, supporting long-term value creation for shareholders.
BP reported this morning that profits slumped to a fresh four-year low in the fourth quarter, which comes amid reports that an activist hedge fund manager has taken a stake in the oil major. For the fourth quarter, BP reported an underlying replacement cost profit of $1.17bn (£947m), falling sharply from the $2.27bn it reported in the third quarter. Underlying replacement cost profit is the metric that BP uses as its version of net income. For the year, BP posted underlying cost profit of $8.92bn, down from $13.84bn for 2023. The oil major said that the fall in profits reflected weaker realised refining margins, among other factors. Despite weaker quarterly results, BP announced another share buyback of $1.75bn, and an ordinary share dividend of $0.08.
Dunelm Group plc reported its interim results for the 26 weeks ended 28 December 2024, showcasing solid performance and strategic progress despite a challenging retail environment. The company achieved a 2.4% increase in sales, with a notable 39% of total sales coming from digital channels. Gross margins improved slightly, and profit before tax remained stable. Dunelm expanded its store portfolio into inner London and Ireland, and increased market share to 7.8%. The company remains confident in its business model and strategic plans, while prioritizing shareholder returns with increased dividends.
