The S&P and Nasdaq were down sharply Monday on concern about an artificial intelligence stock bubble popping because of the emergence of Chinese startup DeepSeek, which has possibly made a competitive AI model for a fraction of the billions Silicon Valley is spending.  The Nasdaq lost 3.07%, falling to 19,341.83, and the S&P slid 1.46% to 6,012.28. Company News:

Halfords has bolstered profit guidance after it returned to sales growth over the Christmas quarter and recent trading benefited from the cold weather.  The company now expects to deliver underlying pre-tax profits for 2024/25 of between £32 million and £37 million, versus the City consensus of £28.3 million.  The group said: “In recent months we have seen an improvement in trading alongside continued progress on a number of key initiatives, including our pricing and promotion strategies and cost reduction measures.”  Strong demand for promotions in cycling contributed to retail like-for-like sales growth of 13.1% in December. The cold weather meant motoring product sales delivered underlying growth in January of 5.5%.

Pets at home this morning, reported that revenue fell 0.2 per cent to £361.6m in the 12 weeks to January 2. Retail revenue fell 2.8 per cent like for like, which Pets at Home attributed to a “more challenging UK consumer backdrop with particularly weak footfall from October”. Growth was instead driven by revenue in its veterinary arm, with like-for-like growth of 19.9 per cent supported by “growth in subscriptions, visits, and average transaction values”. The company has 400 surgeries across the UK.

SThree reported its financial results for the year ended November 30, 2024, showing a decline in key metrics due to challenging global economic conditions. Despite a 9% year-on-year decrease in group net fees, the company maintained a resilient performance with an operating profit conversion ratio of 18% and a robust balance sheet with net cash of £69.7 million. The company continues to focus on its strategic STEM and Contract approach, supported by the ongoing Technology Improvement Programme, positioning itself for future growth as market conditions improve.
