Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open -10 points at 7766. UK 100 is set to open slightly lower on Tuesday as critical US debt talks resume and Chinese economic data missed overnight. Wall Street ended higher on Monday with the Dow +0.1%, S&P +0.3% and Nasdaq +0.7%. In Asia the Nikkei closed +0.7%, Shanghai -0.3% and Hong Kong +0.1%.

Boohoo reported a halving of annual core earnings as shoppers were squeezed by a cost-of-living crisis and returned to physical stores post-pandemic. Their EBITDA came in at £63.3m in the year to Feb 28th, slightly ahead of analysts’ consensus forecast of £62.1m, but down from the £125.1m made in 2021-22. For 2023/24 they have forecast £69-78m, in line with market expectations.

 

Greggs posted underlying sales growth of 15.7% in the 10 weeks to May 13th and said it was on track to meet annual guidance.

 

Imperial Brands reported a rise in HY profit, as higher cigarette prices helped the company offset the impact of its Russia exit and lower volumes. Their operating profit rose to £1.53bn in the six months ended March 31st, from £1.2bn a year earlier.

 

Land Securities swung to an annual loss as surging interest rates and broader economic worries weighed on the valuation of properties.

 

Vodafone plans to cut 11,000 jobs over three years to simplify the telecoms group, which “must change” according to new boss Margherita Della Valle as they forecast little or no growth in earnings for the new financial year.
