Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open -26 points this morning at 7281. The UK 100 looks set to open slightly lower after US markets closed higher yesterday, but well off best levels for the day ahead of key inflation data tomorrow.  Results from the US midterm elections also started to come in, Initial polls were suggesting the Republicans would take control of the House of Congress while the race for the Senate was said to be too close to call.  The Dow Jones gained 333.83 points, or 1.02%, to close at 33,160.83. The S&P was up 0.56% to finish at 3,828.11. While the Nasdaq advanced 0.49% to 10,616.20. All three indexes rallied for a third straight day.

AstraZeneca receives US FDA approval for the use of PT027 for the treatment of adult asthma.

 

 

Aviva reiterated its plan to start a share buyback programme alongside its 2022 results as they reported a 10% rise in general insurance gross written premiums in the first nine months to £7.2bn. The value of new business in its UK and Ireland life division rose 46% over the same period to £466m.

 

 

Flutter upgrades their FY US revenue guidance after 82% YoY growth in Q3.

 

 

ITV state that the FIFA World Cup would boost ad revenue in the Christmas quarter, helping compensate for weaker summer demand, but cautioned over the high degree of economic uncertainty. Ad revenue for FY 2022 is expected to be down between 1-1.5% on 2021.

 

 

JD Wetherspoon reported a 9.6% rise in like-for-like sales in the first 14 weeks of the financial year and said it expected positive cash flow this year as their sales rise as COVID-19 curbs end.

 

 

Marks & Spencer reiterated that FY profit would fall short of the prior year's outcome due to higher costs and pressure on household budgets, as they reported a 24% decline in H1 profit. They reported a profit before tax and adjusting items of £205.5m for the six months to Oct 1st (2021: £269.4m profit) despite an 8.5% rise in revenue to £5.54bn as higher costs weighed.

 

 

Taylor Wimpey says they are on track to deliver FY operating profit in line with market expectations. They have flagged a drop in its sales rate and an increase in cancellation rates as a sharp rise in mortgage rates and a deepening cost-of-living crisis hits the country.

 

 

Watches of Switzerland expects their H1 FY23 adjusted EBIT of £86-88m.
