The UK 100 is called to open +47 points this morning at 7521. The UK 100 looks set to make a strong start to trading on Thursday following gains in the US on Wednesday and in Asia overnight. US stocks ended the session on a positive note as selling pressure faded and commodity prices held steady in a quiet trading day. The S&P climbed 0.3% after the benchmark index fell for three straight sessions, closing at 4,141 points. The Dow Jones added 60 points, or about 0.2%, to finish at 32,969 and the Nasdaq gained 0.4% to close at 12,432. In focus today will be the first day of the Jackson Hole symposium of central bankers.
AstraZeneca's Tagrisso has been approved in Japan for early-stage EGFR-mutated lung cancer.
CRH reports that their interim pretax profit has risen to $1.2bn (2021: $929m), as they declare a 24 US cents dividend, +4% YoY. Their Americas material division has been supported by resilient underlying demand. The Europe materials trading environment has been challenged by inflation and uncertainty.
Grafton Group reported a H1 adjusted pretax profit of £143.4m, down 3.6% from £148.8m last year. They state that volumes and profitability were lower in Selco after exception year earlier. Revenue and profit in Woodie's DIY, Home and Garden retail business has normalised. They are also seeing improved supply chain consistency and eased building material shortages.
Harbour Energy report a H1 pretax profit of $1.49bn (2021: $120.2m) as they declare an interim dividend of 11 cents per share. They have increased their share buybacks to $300m. They have also narrowed their FY production guidance to 200-210 kboepd.
Hays report that their FY22 net fees increased to £1.19bn (2021: £918.1m) as did their operating profit £210.1m (2021: £95.1m). They reported a FY22 pretax profit of £204.3m (2021: £88.1m), stating they have made a good start to the new financial year as their fees and activity are sequentially stable at strong levels.
