Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open +30 points this morning at 7336.  The UK 100 looks set to continue its strong start to the week this morning, opening firmly higher, this comes in spite of a tough session on Wall Street yesterday which saw US markets close lower on Tuesday with the Dow Jones down 228 points or 0.7% at 31,762, while the tech heavy Nasdaq lost 220 points or 1.9% to close at 11,563, the broader S&P slipped 46 points to 3,921.  US futures however were pointing to a strong opening when markets reopen later today.

Company News:

British American Tobacco reported a drop in H1 profit, driven by impairment charges related to the transfer of its Russian business. Profit from operations on a reported basis came in at £3.68bn (-25%) as the group recorded a charge worth £957m on the transfer for its Russian business following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

Fresnillo's Q2 silver production +8% YoY, gold +6.1%, lead +19% and zinc +13%. They are on track to FY22 goal of 50.5-56.5 moz of silver and 600-650 koz of gold.

GlaxoSmithKline lifted its FY forecast, boosted by reinvigorated demand for its blockbuster Shingrix vaccine, days after overhauling the business with the spinoff of its consumer health unit Haleon. They now expect 2022 sales to rise 6-8% and adjusted operating profit to increase by 13-15%. Previously the company had forecast FY sales to grow by 5-7% and adjusted operating profit to rise 12-14%.

Lloyds reported a dip in H1 profits as soaring consumer goods prices and borrowing costs forced the lender to set aside more cash to cover potential loan defaults. They reported pretax profits of £3.7bn for H1, down from £3.9bn last year, but above the £3.2bn expected by forecasts. They have set aside £377m in impairment charges, prompted by the worsening economic outlook. They also declared a 0.80p interim dividend, up 20% on the year, worth £550m.

Reckitt Benckiser raised its FY revenue forecast after steep price hikes helped it beat Q2 sales expectations. Quarterly like-for-like revenue rose 11.9% on a constant currency basis, ahead of the 6.8% growth analysts had expected.

Rio Tinto reported a 29% drop in H1 profit, hurt by weaker iron ore prices due to cooling demand from top consumer Chine, higher costs and labour shortages.

Wizz Air reported a Q1 operating loss of £285m euros, up from a 109m euro loss the year before as the group was hit by higher costs. They expect to deliver a material operating profit as revenue and pricing momentum continue to improve, and as levels of disruption at airports start to normalise. Wizz Air chair William Franke buys £1.9m in shares of the company.
