Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open +95 points this morning at 7588.   The UK’s blue-chip index looks set to open higher this morning after US markets soared on the back of comments from Fed chair Jerome Powell, As expected, the Fed raised US interest rates by 0.5% and also said it will start shrinking its balance sheet initially by $47bn a month from 1 June but rising to $95bn a month by September.  This saw The Dow Jones rise by 932.27 points, or 2.81%, to close at 34,061.06. The S&P gained 2.99% to 4,300.17. The tech-heavy Nasdaq jumped 3.19% to 12,964.86. It was the biggest gain since 2020 for both the S&P 500 and the Dow.  Focus will now turn today to the Bank of England’s interest rate decision at midday, where it is widely expected that interest rates will rise to 1%, the highest level in the UK for 13 years.
