Markets Overview:

 

The UK 100 is called to open +20 points today at 7593.  A positive start is expected this morning for the UK blue-chip index, ahead of a bumper day of corporate earnings.  The picture was more mixed on Wall Street overnight, with the Dow Jones ending the day as it’s started, unchanged, while the S&P dropped 0.37% and the tech-stocked Nasdaq fell 0.58%. The small cap Russell 2000 rose 0.51%.  In Asia this morning, it was another mixed session, as Japan’s Nikkei and South Korea’s Kospi rose marginally, gaining 0.13% and 0.05%, respectively.  The Shanghai composite in China lifted 0.52% while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index dipped 0.98%.

Airtel Africa investors are to sell over £80m worth of stock, roughly 53 million shares.

 

 

Bellway updates that they expect the strong demand for housing to persist, staving off concerns that a post-lockdown boom in the housing market had started to fade amid a growing cost-of-living squeeze. Their order book stood ar £1.94bn as of Jan 31st, compared with £1.63bn in the corresponding time a year earlier.

 

 

BP reported a profit of $12.8bn in 2021, its highest profit in eight years as natural gas and oil prices soared and the global economy recovered from the pandemic slump. Their replacement cost profit (net earnings) reached $4.1bn in Q4 2021, exceeding analysts' expectations of $3.93bn profit.

 

 

Ocado reported a 12.1% fall in annual core earnings, with investment in the business more than offsetting an increase in revenue. EBITDA in the year ending 28th Nov 2021 was £61m, in line with average analyst forecasts but down from £73.1m in 2019-20.

 

 

SSE upgraded its outlook for FY 2021/22 adjusted earnings to at least 90p from at least 83p in their Q3 trading update.

 

 

TUI report that new bookings for the summer were at pre-pandemic levels, as people make travel plans again following the easing of restrictions. They stated that 3.5m customers had booked a trip for summer 2022 as of Jan 30th. They will return around 0.7bn euros of state aid.
