Markets Overview:

 

The UK 100 is called to open +40 points today at 7575.  The UK’s bluechip index looks set to gain this morning, this follows another strong session on Wall Street on Tuesday, The Dow Jones closed up 273 points or 0.78% at 35,405 whilst the S&P notched 0.7% higher to finish at 4,546.  Meanwhile, the Nasdaq advanced 0.75% to 14,346 and the small-cap tracking Russell 2,000 index rose by 1.1% to 2,050.  Although markets in mainland China, South Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong were closed on Wednesday for the Lunar New Year holidays.  Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 1.68% to close at 27,533.60 while the Topix index gained 2.14% to 1,936.56.

Glencore report that its cobalt output rose 14% in 2021, boosted by the limited restart of production at the world's largest cobalt mine, Mutanda in south-east Democratic of Congo. They reported a 5% fall in copper production and a 3% drop in coal output in 2021, but kept its 2022 outlook unchanged.
GSK announced a settlement worth $1.25bn between its ViiV Healthcare and Gilead Sciences in relation to patent violations by Gilead's Biktarvy, a medicine to treat human immunodeficiency virus.

Vodafone says it was on track to meet its FY guidance after reporting a 2.7% rise in Q3 group service revenue, with growth in Europe and Africa.
