Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open flat today at 7062.  A marginally higher open is expected this morning after BoE's Bailey says rate rise becoming more likely, stateside yesterday on Wall Street had a mixed session with gains for the blue chips of the Dow Jones and the small caps of the Russell 2000, but with the Nasdaq and S&P 500 closing down 0.5% and 0.3% lower. Stocks in Asia were mixed on Tuesday after Goldman Sachs downgraded its China GDP growth expectations to 7.8% from 8.2% while Nomura cut growth to 7.7% this year, down from a previous forecast of 8.2%. In Japan, the Nikkei slipped 0.28% while South Korea’s Kospi dropped 1.01%. China’s Shanghai Composite gained 0.56% and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index surged 1.63%.

Company News:

Card Factory reports that their H1 pretax loss has narrowed YoY to £6.5m from £22.2m.
Close Brothers reports a FY21 pretax profit of £265.2m an increase of 88% from the £140.9m posted in 2020.
Ferguson reports higher annual profit buoyed by strong home improvement demand during the pandemic. Underlying trading profit for the year ended 31st July was $2.1bn (2020: $1.59bn).
Go-Ahead CFO Elodie Brian resigns with immediate effect and their FY21 results are in line with expectations, excluding potential penalty.
Moonpig raises FY revenue guidance to between £270-285m as they state that trading from April 30th to date has been strong.
Pennon Group says EBITDA is in line with expectations as revenue hikes were offset by costs rise.
 
Smiths Group reports that their FY pretax profit jumped to £240m (2020: £133m).
