Markets Overview:

The UK 100 is called to open -50 today at 7045.  A lower open is expected this morning in the UK comes as investors ponder today's ECB rate meeting, as it is questioned whether this could be the first of the major central banks to begin to taper its asset purchase programme? This follows a tough session on Wall Street On Wednesday which saw, the Dow Jones and S&P both fall for the third day straight. The Dow dropped 68 points, and the S&P m slid 0.13%. The Nasdaq was the worst affected of the major benchmarks, dipping 0.6%. Shares in Asia this morning followed the lead from the States, Japan’s Nikkei was down 0.68% to trade at 29,975 and Hong Kong’s Hang Send gave up 1.98% to trade at 25,804 whilst the Shanghai Composite was only slightly lower at 3,673.

Morrisons reported a 37.1% fall in first-half profit, mainly hurt by COVID-19 costs and lost profits in cafes, fuel and food-to-go. The company, which is in the middle of a bidding war between two US private equity firms, said it made a profit of £105m in H1, compared to £167m a year ago.
Lookers current expectations for underlying profit before tax for 2021 unchanged. They also appoint Oliver Laird as CFO from Nov 15 2021.
888 Holdings has said it has agreed with Caesars Entertainment Inc to buy the international assets of the US casino group's William Hill business for £2.2bn. 888 will raise £500m by issuing new equity via a capital raise and expects to have cost savings of about £100m per year from the purchase.
Spire Healthcare posts half-year pre tax profit of £4.7m v a loss of £231.3m a year ago. This was on revenue of £558.2m v £401.9m in the same period last year. Co. are confident that 2021 revenue will be materially above 2019.
