Markets Overview:

 

UK 100 is called to open flat this morning at 7029. Calls for a flat open today come on the back of an all green day yesterday on Wall Street, the Dow Jones closed higher, albeit up just 10 points or 0.03% at 34,323.  The S&P marked a 0.19% improvement with a finish at 4,195. and the Nasdaq completed a green sweep, managing a 0.59% gain to end the session at 13,738.  In Asia today it was a more mixed picture, in Japan, the Nikkei was 0.61% lower at 28,468 whilst Hong Kong’s Hang Seng dropped 0.31% to 29,077. The Shanghai Composite, in China meanwhile rose slightly, up 0.23% at 3,601.

Aviva's life insurance new business premiums were steady at £8.3bn in Q1, supported by record quarterly net flows in its savings and retirement business. General insurance net written premiums rose 4% to £2bn.

 

Johnson Matthey have forecast low-to-mid teens growth in 2021 due to robust demand for its autocatalytic converters and tighter pollution regulations in Asia. They reported a lower annual profit of £504m (2020: £539m).

 

Pets at Home sees higher profit on lockdown pet adoptions boost.

 

Tate & Lyle reports FY adjusted profit before tax of £335m.

 

United Utilities reported a 17.8% drop in FY underlying profit, hit by lower water consumption after offices closed due to coronavirus lockdowns and higher infrastructure spending.
