Markets Overview:

UK 100 is called to open +27 points this morning at 7103.  Calls for another positive open come as the UK Blue-chip index, yesterday returned back to pre-pandemic levels after positive earnings boosted heavyweight stocks. This positivity carrier forward to Wall Street, the Dow Jones jumped 318 points to close at 34,549 and the S&P 500 advanced by 34 points to trade at 4,202, driven forward by better-than-expected job numbers. Asian markets continued the positivity, The Hang Seng index in Hong Kong advanced by 0.24% while the Shanghai Composite in China gained 0.13% and in Japan, the Nikkei 225 rose by 0.19%.

AstraZeneca's Imfinzi lung cancer drug shows survival benefit in Phase 3 trial.

 

IAG reported a 1.14bn euro loss for Q1 2021, (which was slightly better than the 1.17bn euro loss forecast by analysts) as the pandemic restricted travel and they forecast only a small rise in capacity to 25% for Q2. They have reduced their weekly cash burn to 175m euros, which is better than the 185m euros a week it had previously guided. They also have strong liquidity of 10.5bn euros at the end of Q1.

 

InterContinental Hotels Group state that demand is picking up ahead of the US summer season, with pandemic-driven trends such as staycation and the easing of curbs propping up an industry rampaged by the COVID-19 crisis.

 

Numis reports a H1 pretax profit of £39.3m, up from £7.3m YoY.
