Markets Overview:

UK 100 is called to open -4 points this morning at 6996.  A quieter start is expected this morning as investors await todays UK unemployment figures as the UK blue-chip index continues to test 7000.  Stateside yesterday saw tech stocks lower, leading to the Nasdaq lower by 1%, the S&P 500 pulled back 0.5% and the Dow Jones dipped by 0.3% as banks, energy companies and various consume-facing companies also lost ground.  Asian markets were mixed overnight, with Tokyo’s Nikkei down more than 2% but Hong Kong’s Hang Seng and the Shanghai Composite both ended the session in the green.

Associated British Foods reported a halving in H1 profit, hurt by COVID-19 lockdowns which shuttered its Primark fashion stores. The made an adjusted profit before tax of £319m (2020: £636m). Group revenue fell 17% to £6.3bn driven by the loss of retail sales because of the trading restrictions placed on Primark.

 

Avast sees Q1 sales increase 11% to $237.1m (2020: $214.6m) in line with expectations. EBITDA also increased 10% to $133.7m resulting in margin of 56%. They expect FY revenue growth to be at the upper end of 6-8% guided range.

 

Hammerson have appointed Himanshu Raja as its new CFO replacing James Lenton who is resigning this month. They are encouraged by a recovery in footfalls at its malls in England as the country lifted some coronavirus-related restrictions this month. Around 40% of Q2 rent due has been received to date at group level.

 

Moneysupermarket.com reports that their Q1 revenue came in at £85.5m, down 20% from £107.3m the year before. They expect FY results to be "in line with market expectations".

 

Petropavlovsk says Q1 gold output was down 48% YoY to 95,600 oz from 186,200 oz.
