Markets Overview:

 

UK 100 is called to open -15 points this morning at 6698. (8 point Dividend paid)  Calls for a slightly softer open this morning come amid expectations the oil price may fall if the Suez canal reopens fully soon.  This follows yesterdays oil price rally as a large container ship was stuck in the key trading route, leaving other shipments unable to pass.  It was a tough session stateside yesterday, all major benchmarks finished in the red, although bond yields also dropped, the Dow Jones closed slightly lower on Wednesday at 32,420 whilst the S&P dropped 0.55% to close at 3,889.  The Nasdaq was once again the biggest falling index, down by just over 2% to finish Wednesday at 12,961.  It was a mixed session in this morning in Asia, Japan’s Nikkei finished strongly, adding 324 points or 1.14% to trade at 28,729, however, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was on the back foot, falling by 0.05% to 27,904. The Shanghai Composite similarly slipped slightly lower to 3,364.

Company News:

Cineworld reports a 2020 pretax loss of $3.01bn (2019: $212.3m profit) as they suspend their dividend. They anticipate UK cinemas to reopen on the 17th of May with "strong" pent-up demand. They have secured binding commitments for a $213m convertible bond due 2025.

 

Compass Group expects its margins in Q2 to be better than Q1 2021, as it has trimmed costs to cope with an expected slump in revenue driven by coronavirus-led closures.

 

IWG hires former Mothercare interim CEO Glyn Hughes as their new CFO.

 

SIG says trading in 2021 to date has been in line with management expectations, similar to Q4 2020.

 

United Utilities expects their FY group revenue to be lower than last year.
