Markets Overview:

 

UK 100 is called to open -45 points this morning at 6630 (18 point dividend paid).  Calls for a weaker open come as the bond sell off continues, weighing on sentiment as concerns grow over inflation  It was a tough trading day stateside yesterday,  the Dow Jones closed 121 points or 0.39% lower at 31,270 whilst the S&P 500 gave up 1.31% to finish the day at 3,819 and the Nasdaq fell farthest, losing 2.70% to 12,997 at the end of trading.  Asian indices were similarly lower overnight. Japan’s Nikkei dropped 628 points or 2.13% to 28,930 and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng slipped 2.4% to 29,162, whilst the Shanghai Composite chalked up a 2.4% decline to 3,492.

Company News:

Admiral Group posted higher FY earnings as it paid out fewer claims relating to car repairs and accidents, with repeated coronavirus lockdowns in the UK keeping people away from the roads. Pretax profit from continuing operations jumped to £608.2m for FY 2020 (2019: £505.1m).

 

Aviva reported a flat operating profit of £3.2bn for 2020 and have sold its remaining businesses in Italy as it tries to focus on its key markets of Britain, Canada and Ireland. They have sold their Italian life insurance business to CNP Assurances for 543m euros in cash and its general insurance business to Allianz for 330m euros in cash.

 

Galliford Try swings to a pretax profit in H1 of £4.1m, from a £5.6m loss in H1 2019.

 

Meggitt swings to an operating loss of £297m in 2020 from a profit of £325m in 2019.

 

Melrose says aerospace sector recovery is "some way off: with global travel restrictions.

 

Rentokil reports that their FY ongoing revenue increased by 6.3% as their adjusted pretax profit came in at £355.2m up 4.2%.

 

Schroders 2020 pretax profit came in at £610.5m, down from £624.6m in 2019.

 

Vistry Group 2020 pretax profit came in at £98.7m, down from £174.8m in 2019.

 

William Hill posted a steep fall in annual adjusted pretax profit as it was forced to shut shops due to the pandemic and took a hit from the cancellation of global sporting events. They reported an adjusted pretax profit of £9.1m for FY 2020 (2019: £96.5m).
