Markets Overview:

UK 100 is called to open -30 points this morning at 6594.  Calls for a negative open come as global markets fell both yesterday and overnight and sterling jumps with reports Rishi Sunak could extend stamp duty holiday.  Stateside yesterday saw the Dow Jones closing up 0.05% at 31,537 while the S&P was the stand out performer, rising 0.13% to 3,881. The Nasdaq was the biggest faller, giving up 0.5% to 13,465, however all three indices recovered from far more significant earlier falls by the testimony of Fed chair Jay Powell to the Senate Banking Committee yesterday as he sent no signals he was overly concerned about a recent sharp rise in long term US bond yields while also remaining relatively soft on the inflation outlook.  Asian shares tumbled sharply, following US markets’ rocky session, with China down more than 2% and Japan and Australia down more than 1%.  Hong Kong also fell sharply this morning, the Hang Seng falling by 2%.

Company News:

Aviva agrees to sell its entire 40% stake in JV in Turkey for £122m.

Lloyds reported FY pretax profits of £1.2bn, which beat average analyst forecasts of £905m after pandemic lockdowns shrank household spending and drove up provisions for bad loans. They set aside £4.2bn to cover loans expected to sour, which was below the £4.5-5.5bn range previously given. They are to pay a dividend of 0.57p per share, which was the maximum allowed by the Bank of England and above a forecast of 0.53p. Charlie Nunn has also been appointed as their new CEO and will start on Aug 16th.

Metro Bank loss widens as pandemic provisions soar. They reported an underlying FY pretax loss of £271.8m, (compared to £11.7m a year earlier) with £124m of the loss an impact from the coronavirus pandemic.

Reckitt Benckiser capped 2020 with the strongest sales in its history, as the COVID-19 pandemic made hygiene a top priority and fuelled demand for its cleaning products. They reported a 11.8% rise in like-for-like sales growth for the FY. They also announced they are going to sell its Scholl foot products business to private equity firm Yellow Wood Partners and acquire the Biofreeze brand from Performance Health.
