Markets Overview:

UK 100 is called to open -20 points this morning at 6508. UK GDP released this morning showed the UK economy shrank by 9.9% in 2020, making it the worst year on record, however did avoid a double dip recession by beating expectations and growing 1.2% in the 4th quarter, coming in ahead of estimates of 1%.  Banks will be under the spotlight today after Commerzbank's reports got matters off to a poor start yesterday, leading to concerns about NatWest and Barclays next week, and Lloyds.  In Asia overnight, shares in Australia and Japan struggled for gains on Friday as major indices in China, Hong Kong, South Korea and Singapore were closed for the Lunar New Year holiday, a subdued start today also comes in-spite of a broadly firmer session yesterday stateside, although the Dow Jones ended the day seven points lower at 31,321; the  S&P 500 climbed seven points to 3,916.
